What’s the difference between headpins and eyepins?
Headpins and eyepins are both types of wire findings used to make beaded components for earrings, pendants, charms, and more — but they have different ends and uses:
Headpins:

-
Have a flat, round, or decorative “head” at one end.
-
Used to stop beads from sliding off.
-
Perfect for making dangles, drops, and tassels.
Eyepins:

-
Have a small loop (like an eye) at one end.
-
Let you connect beads to other findings easily.
-
Ideal for linking multiple components together to create chains or multi-bead dangles.
Common thicknesses & sizes (for stainless steel)
Since stainless steel is harder than softer metals (like copper or sterling silver), it often comes in slightly thinner gauges so it stays workable:
| Finding type | Common thickness (wire gauge) | Typical lengths |
|---|---|---|
| Headpins | ~0.6mm–0.8mm (22–20 gauge) | 40mm, 50mm, 60mm |
| Eyepins | ~0.6mm–0.8mm (22–20 gauge) | 40mm, 50mm, 60mm |
-
Shorter pins (~40mm) are great for single beads or small charms.
-
Longer pins (~50–60mm or more) work for multi-bead drops or layered designs.
How to bend stainless steel pins
Stainless steel is stiffer than plated or brass pins, so you’ll need slightly stronger tools:
-
Round-nose pliers: To create smooth loops.

-
Chain-nose pliers: To hold and adjust the wire.

-
Nylon-jaw pliers (optional): To straighten or slightly bend without scratching the finish.

Tip: When bending, roll slowly instead of forcing the wire — this helps avoid breakage and keeps your loops neat.
How to cut stainless steel pins to size
-
Use flush cutters rated for hard wire or memory wire cutters (regular cutters can get damaged).

-
Cut the pin slightly longer than needed to allow space for your loop.
-
File the sharp end gently with a metal file if needed for comfort and finish.
Extra tip:
If you plan to work a lot with stainless steel, invest in a good-quality hardened tool set — it makes bending and cutting easier, protects your tools, and keeps your designs looking professional.
